n 1907, Richard Ganske establishes the magazine subscription service "Lesezirkel Daheim" in Kiel, thus laying the foundations of a group of companies that has been growing steadily ever since. Today, the group is one of the leading quality providers of books, magazines, electronic publishing and distribution.

As early as 1938, the Lesezirkel maintains 30 outlets throughout Germany serving 180,000 customers by satisfying their appetite for reading matter and thereby creating 1,300 jobs. In 1941, Kurt Ganske – the son of the company's founder – invests in the HOFFMANN UND CAMPE VERLAG in Hamburg. Nine years later, he takes over the remaining shares of the publishing house. This acquisition marks the starting point for constant growth characterized by bestsellers in the book trade as well as by the development of new brand-shaping magazines in the JAHRESZEITEN VERLAG. The ongoing expansion of the entire group rests substantially upon the success of the two publishing houses, HOFFMANN UND CAMPE VERLAG and JAHRESZEITEN VERLAG. After his father's death in 1979, Thomas Ganske, today's owner, takes on the responsibility for the whole group.

Thomas Ganske continues the strategy of diversifying the portfolio and purchases or invests in 14 additional companies. With iPUBLISH he opens up the business line of electronic publishing and with HOFFMANN UND CAMPE CORPORATE PUBLISHING he becomes a pacemaker in the field of value-oriented customer magazines. Step by step, Thomas Ganske has also been efficiently restructuring the company since 1990. In 2001, these measures result in setting up the GANSKE VERLAGSGRUPPE GMBH as a superior holding company of which he himself becomes chief executive officer. The publishing group now consists of four divisions: books, magazines, new media and distribution. The holding company is directed at further advancing the integration and management of the individual companies. It is to develop joint group strategies and brand presentations and to promote the consistent use of synergy potentials. Securing the independence of the company by way of economic strength and facilitating the process of internationalization remain to be the primary objectives of the medium-sized Hamburg-based enterprise.
